Osteoporosis can be a very painful disease. It affects the bones and is caused by the loss of bone density, essential to keeping your bones healthy.

A way to combat this, and to help ensure that you do not suffer from it in later life, is to make sure you have a good intake Vitamin D, because this helps your body absorb calcium, which, in turn, keeps your bones healthy. Our bones are made up of approximately 35-40% calcium. It is suggested that we take in 800mg of calcium per day at the very minimum.

You can get Vitamin D in many forms. Apart form the obvious supplements available from your doctor, you have the option of various natural products. These include salmon, Soya beans, leafy green vegetables, fish, and of course, exposure to the sun. If you decide to take this latter option, then don’t overdo it – too much sun can be bad for you, so limit the exposure to around 15mins a day, taking into account the strength of the sun.

Please note that dairy products and animal proteins do not form part of this list, because these can actually increase the loss of calcium in your body.

Vitamin K is also important, and you must ensure that a diet rich in Vitamin D also includes vitamin K.

Pears, prunes, raisins and apples are also helpful – these provide a natural source of boron, which stops the body losing calcium, therefore reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Weight bearing exercises are also very good for osteoporosis, because the muscles that cover the bones encourage them to grow stronger.

If you suffer from Osteoporosis, or think you might be at risk, you should take action now. Don’t delay because the more positive changes you make now, the better your quality of life will be in the future.

Magnetic Healing

As you go about your day to day lives we forget that we live on a planet surrounded by space and the great unknown. There are fortunately for mankind a few individual who live their lives trying to understand what lies beyond what we can see and feel. The great unknown surrounds us every day, but most of us are unaware of how there is much there is here on our own planet that is unfamiliar, and undiscovered.

In this time in history the evolving technology is allowing us to understand more of how and why things work. Magnetic therapy is being studied not only for use as power sources, but as healing sources as well. This is where medicine and science converge; where scientists and physicians come together to converge and aid each other in new magnetic therapy discoveries that can have a great influence on our health, and well being.

Studies have shown that the human body is influenced not only by the earth’s natural magnetic field, but also by the external magnetic fields employed in magnetic treatment. Magnetic therapy devices for treating migraines and depression have been show in studies to be very successful. Magnetic arthritis relief products can can enompass many forms such as; magnetic jewelry, magnetic wraps, magnetic mattresses, magnetic body wraps for arthritis, and sports injuries. In many countries outside of the US magnetic healing devices are considered medical equipment by the governments, and patients have easy access to medical healing magnetic products. Studies in Europe have shown that the future of magnetic healing may point toward the stimulation of muscles and nerves, but more remarkable at this moment in time is the ability of magnetic fields to improve circulation, heal fractures, stimulate tissue healing, reduce swelling, aid in reducing joint inflammation, and many more exciting discoveries.

Magnetic treatments for chronic pain are becoming more main stream in the US as hospitals, and clinics such as The Mayo Clinic continue to discover the power of healing migraine headaches, Fibromyalgia, depression, and the chronic pain of arthritis. Magnetic healing therapy is beneficial in the fact that it has no side effects, is very affordable, and can be used on most parts of the body.

Healing involves more than just relieving symptoms or fixing a broken area. it involves restoring the body’s energy systems back to their natural healthy state, so we feel physically and emotionally well, and can confidently take on the day to day challenges in our lives. It also involves doing so with the fewest possible complications and long term health risks. The integration of holistic therapies with conventional medication is what holds the key to a better understand of how we as humans are connected to our planet.
As people open their minds to using magnetic therapy along with other holistic therapies, such as the ancient healing therapy acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and other alternative health care approaches. Scientists and physicians are opening doors to in completely new dimensions to wellness–forcing us to re-think the normal approach to healing.

Discover how safe and effective magnetic therapy can be, and you don’t have to worry about unwanted side effects, or a prescripiton from you doctor.
If you are Pregnant, wear a pace maker, have an implanted insulin pump or other inplanted device that may be affected by magnetic fields you are not a canidate for magnetic therapy.

A lot of research has gone into showing that alcoholism is indeed a disease which has a biological
basis. Looking at alcoholism as a disease rather than a habit has a lot of positive connotations.
People started looking at alcoholics with sympathy rather than hatred and started viewing alcoholism
as a disease which has to be treated. The social stigma associated with alcoholism relented a bit and
various treatment options came into being. Experts feel that apart from biological, there is also a genetic association with the disease of alcoholism.

According to them, this alcoholism disease is inherited from fathers and forefathers. The blame on the alcoholic is not so severe as people started viewing them with sympathy as they have inherited a disease which they had no control over. Other researchers feel that alcoholism is not genetic but purely biological. They argue that certain individuals are prone to addictions including addiction to alcohol and that they cannot do without it.

They feel that this is due to strong biological reasons. As this theory claims strong biological evidence this disease of alcoholism accordingly has to be treated as nothing but a disease. The person afflicted with alcoholism has to be pitied as with any other chronic disease. It goes without saying that as with other diseases, alcoholism afflicted patients must undergo treatment in an attempt to cure his or her life and lead a normal, healthy and happy life.

Pain compels many Americans to seek medical advice especially since it can severely affect the quality of life for most sufferers. Fortunately, science and technology have joined forces to provide electronic pain relief to people who need them the most.

You can choose from either a TENS device or an EMS device for your electronic pain relief management. One is not better than the other, only that each one possesses its own merits in the pain management.

TENS devices deliver high frequency electrical pulses into the skin and through the nerve endings, which effectively blocks the pain signals before these reach the brain. In essence, when there are no pain signals, no pain felt.

EMS devices transmit low frequency electrical pulses into the body, which then causes it to release its natural painkillers – beta-endorphin. Thus, pain is prevented by the body itself. Furthermore, EMS units are utilized in treating muscle atrophy after surgery and injury, with the result that EMS can be better for some individuals than TENS can be.

Each of these devices comes with difference accessories like self-adhesive electrodes, conductive gel made from aloe vera and even a small towel to clean the skin beforehand. These are necessary to make the units function as they are intended to be.

TENS and EMS provide temporary relief for many types of pain from headaches to calf spasms. Without the addictive effects of medicines, these electronic pain relief devices are one of your best options in total pain management.

Magnetic therapy, although plagued with controversies, proves to be a popular form of alternative therapy. It makes use of magnetic bracelets, anklets and necklaces to provide pain relief.

Magnetic therapy is used to relieve pain and restore energy. It possesses an ancient heritage and has been mentioned in some of the earliest writings in Egypt, India and Greece. It dates back to thousands of years ago during the time of the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Today, it is looked upon as a popular form of alternative medicine.

Magnetic therapy uses the natural energy of magnetism that is important to the overall health of a person. To understand magnetic therapy, one would need to think of one’s body to contain electrical cells. The cell have a positive charge as well as a negative charge. The body can function at its topmost level when both the polarities of the cells are at an equal level. The polarities are said to have the effects mentioned below:

North Pole (Positive): Calming and relaxing effect
South Pole (Negative): Motivating and stimulating effect

The magnetic therapy uses the magnetic field to assist the body’s normal healing processes. Applying the magnetic fields to an injured area helps to improve the blood circulation. This would in turn help to enhance body’s natural healing process. This improved blood circulation and fluid exchange also reduces the pain and inflammation.

Medical studies have shown that magnet therapy can prove to be very effective as it blocks the sensation of pain. Although this has been a matter of much debate, it has been rumored; that magnetic therapy can enable the body to regain its self-healing electromagnetic balance in the natural way. It is also known that the magnetic therapy helps in the prevention and treatment of ailments.

There are two types of fixed magnets: unipolar and bipolar. Unipolar magnets have a positive charge on one end and a negative charge on the other. The concentration on one direction assures a most advantageous depth of penetration of energies. On the other hand, the bipolar magnets have the North and South polarities on the same side.

However, one has to careful with magnetic therapy. If one is exposed continuously to excessive static electricity due to weather fluctuations and household electrical devices then the body becomes flooded with the positive ions. This can cause a certain imbalance in the body, which can result in the headaches, migraines, insomnia, muscle and joint pain, tiredness, fatigue etc.

The effectiveness of magnetic therapy rests on certain factors:

The magnet strength

The thickness of the magnet

The spacing of the magnets

The number of magnets used

Today, there are stylishly designed magnetic bracelets available to help one to enrich from the benefits of magnetic therapy even from the confines of one’s own home. Magnetic bracelets, anklets and such other magnetic jewelry prove ideal for pain relief.

Copper Magnetic Bracelets:
These are used for the relief of Arthritic pain. Copper has also been used for its medicinal qualities for years. In such bracelets, the magnet in embedded in every link. This helps to enhance the strength of the magnetic bracelet.

Stainless Steel Magnetic Bracelets:
The stainless steel base ensures that the magnetic bracelets do not tarnish. These magnetic bracelets are useful for providing pain relief on the upper back; shoulder, neck and they also help in preventing headaches.

Magnetic Anklets:
These are also used for pain relief on the foot area, ankle, heel and lower knee area. Also made of stainless steel, these have the magnets interwoven into the design.

Magnetic Wrap Necklace:
These are magnetic necklaces that are used as chokers. They comprise of magnetic hematite beads and are accentuated with crystals in different colors. Along with the healing properties, these are also fashionably designed and have the power to bring relief to arthritic pain.

One can also find magnetic wraps that can be used on the hand, ankle or neck. These are magnetic bracelets that are sometimes stretchy and may have a magnetic clasp. Also known as magnetic lariats, these can simply be wrapped around your arm, neck or the ankle. The magnets sometimes perform the function of the clasp.

Magnetic therapy, although scoffed by most people, is known to provide relief from pain to a relative extent. Even though, there have been many arguments regarding the benefits and the results of this healing, it proves to be a natural way to restore energy and is a very effective, safe and economical form of alternative therapy.

Magnetic healing has been in use since ancient days. The Greeks used lodestones (which are a natural form of magnets) to provide healing. Paracelsus used magnets to remove illnesses from the body.

Today, with the rising interest in alternative medicine, magnetic therapy has begun to generate a good amount of curiosity in the minds of people. In magnet therapy, a magnet and its magnetic energy waves are used to promote healing and wellness in the patient.

In this type of healing, the magnet is placed on the part of the body which is in pain, for a period of time. The time period can range from 5 minutes to a couple of hours.

Usually, different types of jewelry items are found which incorporate magnets within them. You can find magnetic bracelets, earrings, belts etc. which are used by the patients. You can also find magnetic beds, pillows and cushions which help cure body pain and insomnia.

The idea is that magnets produce magnetic waves of energy. This energy can penetrate through the body and produce healing effects on the part of the body where the magnet has been placed. Some say, that the magnetic energy waves attract blood flow and nutrients to the affected area and this actually promotes a cure.

There are various benefits of magnetic healing and magnetic therapy. They are:

Magnets are known to provide relief from joint pains and muscle pains.

Sleeping in a magnetic bed is known to provide relief from body pain.

Sleeping with a magnetic cushion is known to cure insomnia.

Wearing a magnetic bracelet is known to help carpal tunnel syndrome.

Magnets are said to help with migraines.

Magnets can often relieve pain that arises after surgery.

Almost everyone can use magnets for healing and therapy. However, in certain cases, it is best to avoid using magnets. These are:

If you have a pacemaker in your heart, the magnetic waves will interfere with its working. So it is best to avoid using magnets.

If you are pregnant it is best to avoid using magnets, as it has not been tested on pregnant women.

If you have an allergy in the metal used in the magnets, then you can cover it with hypoallergenic plastic and then use it.

Back Pain and Sciatica: Exercises for Sciatica Relief

Sciatica is a set of symptoms associated with Back Pain that is caused by irregular compression of radicular nerve or nerve roots of sciatic nerve. Exercises are often best means to achieve Sciatica Relief. They vary according to the cause of pain…

Enlarge Image What is Sciatica?
This is a term that is the cause of much confusion and is often grossly misunderstood. Sciatica is not just a disease or ailment or even a diagnosis by itself that would point to any particular cause of pain, rather it is a set of symptoms. Generally it is used for any pain that is caused by the irregular compression or nuisance in one or more of the nerves in the lower part of the spinal chord that make up the sciatic nerve. These can be caused by various different conditions.

The medical term for sciatic is radiculopathy, which occurs when a spinal disc in the lower back has been extended beyond what is its normal position, irritating the radicular nerve or the nerve root which is connected to the sciatic nerve that in turn has its off-shoots snaking its way down into the lower body through the back of the leg and thus pain is experienced along its path.

Exercises for Sciatica
While we may prefer bed rest to exercise when in pain, active sciatica exercise is the best mechanism for healing sciatica pain. Doctors advise rest to patients for just a day or two after a bout of sciatica but inactivity will only aid in worsening the pain because due to the lack of movement the muscles and spinal structures become further de-conditioned and thus their support of the back weakens leading to back injury and major strain on the muscles and spine which adds to the lower body and back pain.

Exercising also keeps the fluids between the discs healthy and well lubricated as also helping with the dispersion of nutrition and strengthening the muscles of the abdomen and back.
Sciatica exercises for sciatica relief are of many different kinds depending on the cause of the pain and mostly involve stretching to target specific muscles. Engaging in regular exercise helps to keep these muscles mobile and strengthens them that helps to speed up the recuperation process as well as prevent future such painful incidences.

A physiotherapist, certified athletic trainer (ATC), chiropractor, physiatrist or a specialist who treats back and lower body problems can be consulted for sciatica pain relief and exercise should only be done under the supervision of a trained professional. It is very important to get an accurate diagnosis of the cause of the pain because the exercise program to be recommended rests on that. Though rare, sciatica can also be caused by an infection or tumor that requires serious and immediate medical attention.
1. Sciatica from a herniated disc
2. Sciatica from spinal stenosis
3. Sciatica from degenerative disc disease
4. Sciatica from isthmic spondylolisthesis
5. Sciatic pain from piriformis syndrome
6. Sciatic pain from sacroiliac joint dysfunction
7. Hamstring stretching exercises for sciatica

The sciatica exercises for each of these conditions is different and must be done correctly, on a regular basis at least twice a day to obtain optimum results.

Herniated disc Sciatica
It normally causes acute leg pain as the disc protrudes in the incorrect direction or a nerve root is compressed causing pain to radiate along the sciatic nerve. The exercises prescribed for such a problem are ones that need the patient to get into a backwards bending position called extension exercises or press-ups which cause the pain to ease by moving the muscles in the lower extremities upwards and into the lower back.

Spinal Stenosis Sciatica
This is caused by nerve root irritation or impinging which results in the constriction of the nerve’s passageway. This pain shots down the leg while walking or muscle flexing. All exercises that require the patient to bend forward and flex the lower spine help to clear and expand these passages by stabilizing the lower spine thus allowing for the condition heal.

Degenerative disc disease Sciatica
When a degenerative disc intrudes on a sciatic nerve in the lower back it is the cause of sciatica. Exercises for lumbar stabilization are prescribed for this kind of sciatica and includes the McKenzie Method. The lumbar spine and pelvic regions are trained using these exercise movements.

Isthmic spondylolisthesis Sciatica
When the N5 nerve root is impinged upon it is the cause of this kind of sciatica. There are two kinds of exercises that help in this condition; flexing and stabilizing that help the lumbar spine to remain stable in a flexed position.

Piriformis syndrome
Experiencing pain along the sciatic nerve is a common symptom of piriformis syndrome. But this syndrome is not really sciatica but a muscle called the piriformis muscle which lies in close proximity to the sciatic nerve itself is irritates it to cause pain. These cause excruciating pain, tingling and numbness running from the lower back, to the rear and sometimes down the leg and into the foot. Stretching exercises for the piriformis muscle, hamstring muscles and hip extensor muscles helps decrease the painful symptoms.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
The inflammation of the SI joint or sacroiliac joint causes this. Therefore this is not true sciatica but the similar symptoms occur and exercise like stretching and movement exercises should be performed to help alleviate the pain.

Long term Sciatica Relief
These exercises must be performed as a part of daily living and not just treated as a means to get rid of back pain. They ensure good spinal health and help to ease the pressures that stress has on us. It is also a must to maintain good posture while performing daily activities and use ergonomically correct furniture to make sure the lower back is well supported and avoid standing or being cramped in the same position for long periods of time.

Muscle pain can be debilitating… Read about what the causes are and the methods for relieving them.

When 36 year old Aaron Powell, a software engineer by profession, woke up on Sunday morning and found that the muscles in his back and legs were killing him, he knew he would have to call it quits about joining his friends on the day long hiking trip they had planned. He knew what had brought on the pain in his muscles; he had been hauling furniture into the new apartment he had moved into, practically all through Saturday.

While everybody experiences the occasional muscle pain some time or the other in their lives, for people who suffer from chronic muscle pain, it can be an incapacitating condition, with the quality of life deteriorating to a great extent. Muscle pain may be caused by a specific injury, or due to muscular spasms, or because it affects the soft connective tissues surrounding muscles such as tendons, ligaments, and fascia, or it could be as a result of a broader condition, like arthritis. It can range in intensity from aches that come on infrequently to disabling, chronic pain.

Usually, muscle pain is linked to overuse, physical exertion, or injury due to exercise. In such cases, the pain tends to affect specific muscles, starting either during the activity or after it. Tension can also result in muscle pain.

In the United States, pain in the muscle is the second most prevalent reason for visits to the doctor. According to estimates, 80 percent of Americans experience muscle pain, of some type or the other, at some part of their lives or the other. People often push their muscles right to their limits, and sometimes even beyond that. If muscles are pushed to limits that are beyond their capacity, the fibers in them begin tearing.

In fact, severely overworked muscles can develop innumerable tiny tears. The body responds by repairing these small little tears, and this is what causes the familiar ache and tightness we feel when we get a muscle pain. While most of these just cause minor discomfort, others can result in permanent disability, especially when the back and neck are affected. While there are many therapies that can provide muscle pain relief, choosing amongst them is largely dependent upon the cause of the muscle pain, how severe it is along with its duration, and of course according to what the doctor prescribes or the patient chooses.

Prescription and Over-The-Counter Medicines
These medications, which include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, or Tylenol, are used to alleviate muscle pain. Certain nutritional supplements may also be advised in order to provide muscle pain relief. For instance, magnesium and calcium supplements are used for treating leg cramps that develop in the night. Enzyme therapy, containing bromelain, are also used to treat certain kinds of muscle pain.

Massage and Bodywork Therapies
Bodywork therapies are highly useful for providing muscle pain relief and restoring full body function. Massage, in particular, is often recommended to relieve tension and pain, which helps to increase blood circulation, thus bringing nutrients and oxygen to the muscles that are affected and also help to carry away toxic substances. If there is a strain in a muscle, a massage can prevent the shortening of the muscle while it heals.

Some of the other effective bodywork therapies are:
Reflexology: Pressure is applied to various reflex points on the hands and feet which helps the body to heal itself.

Shiatsu: This involves pressure applied with fingers to certain points on the meridians of the body, which improves circulation and eases pain.

Feldenkrais Method: In this method, new ways of moving the body helps to relax tense or cramped muscles.

Rolfing: Connective tissue and muscles are manipulated, which realigns the body according to the field of gravity.

Trained practitioners are required to perform these therapies.

Aromatherapy
In this therapy, essential oils from certain herbs and plants are used for muscle pain relief, along with any inflammation or spasms that may accompany it. The oils are usually applied with compresses or gentle massages. Some of them can also be added to warm bathwater. Some of the common essential oils used for muscle pain are: helichrysum, ginger, peppermint, marjoram, and thyme.

At-Home Remedies
At-home remedies like ice packs are also effective for relieving muscle pain, as are physical aides like wrist wraps and back braces, which hold bones and joints in their correct positions, thus helping to reduce strain being put on the affected muscles.

Exercises for Muscle Strengthening
Physical therapists or doctors also usually prescribe certain exercises, which help in increasing muscular flexibility and strength. A physical therapy course is also useful for educating patients about the importance of using ergonomic tools, like padded chairs, which help to reduce strain on muscles. Therapists also teach patients the correct ways of sitting, lifting, walking, or doing work that requires repetitive movements, in order to prevent problems in the future.
